MEDIA ADVISORY: House Finance Committee meets three times this week to hear legislation
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Finance Committee will meet three times this week to hear testimony on a variety of legislation.
On Tuesday. May 2 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in Room 35 of the State House, the committee will hear a variety of legislation, including the following bills:

2023-H 5639, sponsored by Rep. Justine A. Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), establishes new programs for free breakfast and lunch meals in all public schools.

2023-H 5793, sponsored by Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls), requires that the school housing aid ratio shall be increased by five percent for projects that ensure Rhode Island based minority business enterprises reach a minimum of 20 percent of the dollar value of the bid.

2023-H 5817, sponsored by Rep. Brian J. Rea (R-Dist. Smithfield, Glocester), would authorize the appropriation of the sum of $100,000 to each public school in Rhode Island for school safety and security improvements.

2023-H 6111, sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown), requires that all projects seeking school housing aid shall complete an independent, objective, reasoned study on all projects over $10 million dollars.
On Wednesday, May 3 at 4 p.m. in Room 35 of the State House, the committee will hear a variety of legislation, including the following bills:

2023-H 5094, sponsored by Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter), establishes the Rhode Island Early Educator Investment Act to develop and implement strategies to improve the compensation of early childhood educators.

2023-H 5193, sponsored by Rep. Grace Diaz (D-Dist. 11, Providence), creates the Rhode Island Child Care Assistance Program that governs both family eligibility for the state’s child care subsidy program and the rates paid to child care providers serving families receiving a subsidy.

2023-H 5644, sponsored by Rep. Arthur Handy (D-Dist. 18, Cranston), amends the Rhode Island Works Program to expand and increase benefits under the program.

2023-H 5990, sponsored by Representative Giraldo, increases the amount of unpaid parental or family leave available to an employee, from 13 weeks to 26 weeks, in any two calendar years.
On Thursday, May 4 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in Room 35 of the State House, the committee will hear a variety of legislation, including the following bills:

2023-H 5254, sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), would extend Medicaid and CHIP assistance to certain individuals which assistance was lost through to January 1, 2024.

2023-H 5798, sponsored by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence), increases the daily rate of payments to nursing facilities by 20 percent for single occupancy rooms to include private bathrooms.

2023-H 5998, sponsored by Rep. Tina L. Spears (D-Dist. 36, Charlestown, New Shoreham, South Kingstown, Westerly), authorizes the secretary of the Executive Office of Health and Human Services to develop a sliding scale decrease in benefits as a beneficiary's income increases up to 250 percent of the federal poverty level.

2023-H 6205, sponsored by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon, Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), increases the personal needs allowances of nursing facility residents from $50 to $100 per month.
