4/27/2026 Media Advisory: Senate Health, Human Services Committee to hear bills on safe staffing, nursing facilities, pharmacies
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Health and Human Services Committee will meet tomorrow for hearings on a bill concerning safe staffing and others on nursing and hospice care and Thursday for hearings on bills concerning pharmacies.

The committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow, Tuesday, April 28, at the rise of the Senate session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House for hearings on several bills including:
  • 2026-S 2258 — This resolution sponsored by Health and Human Services Committee Chairwoman Melissa A. Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield) would create a 15-member joint commission to study and provide recommendations regarding safe staffing ratios in hospitals.
  • 2026-S 2114 — Sponsored by Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston), this bill would require that an individual’s caregiver be present when healthcare decisions are discussed with the hospice team. It would also prevent the denial of home hospice care because of age or income.
  • 2026-S 2378 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Lammis J. Vargas (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence) authorizes an increase in resource eligibility limits for persons with long-term-care needs who reside at home and requires semi-annual reports from Medicaid-certified assisted-living facilities and adult day service providers.
The committee meets again Thursday, April 30, at the rise of the Senate session in Room 211 on the second floor of the State House for hearings on several bills concerning pharmacies, including:
  • 2026-S 2856 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Pamela J. Lauria (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence) would include routine, scheduled or recommended immunizations to individuals between the ages of 3 and 18 years under the consent and reporting provisions required for pharmacy-administered immunizations.
  • 2026-S 2888 — Sponsored by Sen. Bridget Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown), this bill sets conditions for pharmacists to prescribe tobacco cessation drug therapies.
Both meetings will be televised by Capitol Television on Cox channels 15 and 61 for high definition; i3Broadband (Formerly Full Channel) channel 15; and Verizon channel 34. Senate committee hearings may also air on Channel 75 for Cox Subscribers. Livestreaming is available at https://capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.

Written testimony may be emailed to  SLegislation@rilegislature.gov and must be submitted prior to 3 p.m. the day of the applicable hearing in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records. It will be considered a public record.
