3/30/2026 Media Advisory: House Labor Committee to hear worker protection bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Labor Committee is scheduled to meet today for hearings on several bills to protect workers.

The meeting is scheduled today, Monday, March 30, at 4 p.m. in the House Lounge on the second floor of the State House.

Among the bills scheduled to be heard are:
  • 2026-H 8311 — Sponsored by Rep. Matthew S. Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), this bill requires employers to protect employees from extreme temperatures through rest breaks, personal protective equipment, training and equipment, and mandates quarterly supervisor training to recognize and mitigate heat- and cold-related risks.
  • 2026-H 8331 — The Trades Worker Justice and Safety Act, sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), would protect workers from harassment, discrimination, intimidation, bullying, abuse and retaliation would and would increase the minimum wage alongside inflation beginning Jan. 1, 2029.
  • 2026-H 7964 — Sponsored by Rep. Jennifer A. Stewart (D-Dist. 59, Pawtucket), the Rhode Island Opportunity for Employee Ownership Act would provide employees of a business that will be sold an opportunity and a process to potentially purchase that business as a workers’ cooperative.
The meeting will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.

Testimony on the bills being heard will be accepted in person or in writing via email to HouseLabor@rilegislature.gov. Written testimony must include a name and any applicable organization, the bill number(s) and viewpoint (for/against/neither). It will be considered a public document.
