2/2/2026 Media Advisory: House Labor Committee to hear bills on self-checkout, shorter workweek
STATE HOUSE – The House Labor Committee is scheduled to meet Thursday for hearings on several pieces of legislation, including one imposing limits on self-checkouts and others concerning the institution of a 32-hour workweek.

The meeting is scheduled Thursday, Feb. 5, at the rise of the House (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in Room 135 on the first floor of the State House.
Among the bills scheduled to be heard are:
  • 2026-H 7290 — Sponsored by Rep. Megan L. Cotter (D-Dist. 39, Exeter, Richmond, Hopkinton), this bill places limits on the number of self-service checkout stations a grocery store can have and on the workload of employees assigned to monitor those checkout stations.
  • 2026-H 7362 — Sponsored by Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls), this bill mandates that at workplaces employing 500 or more employees, the workweek be reduced to 32 hours with the same rate of pay as currently for 40 hours, with work excess of 32 hours in any one workweek qualifying for overtime pay.
  • 2026-H 7367 — Also sponsored by Representative Alzate, this bill creates a nine-member commission to study and provide recommendations to reduce the 40 workweek to a 32-hour workweek.

The meeting will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox channel 61, on i3Broadband channel 15 and on Verizon channel 34. It will be live streamed at capitoltvri.cablecast.tv.

Testimony on the bills being heard will be accepted in person or in writing via email to HouseLabor@rilegislature.gov. Written testimony must include a name and any applicable organization, the bill number(s) and viewpoint (for/against/neither). It will be considered a public document.
