3/27/2023 Media Advisory: House schedules committee vote on nondisclosure agreements legislation
STATE HOUSE – The House Labor Committee meets Wednesday, when it will vote on legislation to prohibit employers from requiring employees to sign nondisclosure agreements about criminal conduct or violations of civil rights. The committee will also hold hearings on several bills concerning minimum wages and other matters.

The meeting is scheduled Wednesday, March 29, at the rise of the House session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in the House Lounge on the second floor of the State House.

Scheduled for a vote is:
  • 2023-H 5929 — Sponsored by Rep. Teresa A. Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, South Kingstown, Narragansett), this bill would prohibit employers from requiring employees to execute nondisclosure or nondisparagement agreements regarding alleged violations of civil rights or criminal conduct as a condition of employment.
 
The committee will also hold hearings on several bills concerning minimum wages, including:
  • 2023-H 5181 — This bill, sponsored by Rep. Enrique George Sanchez (D-Dist. 9, Providence), would repeal a law that allows employers to pay less than the minimum wage to some minors and full-time students younger than 19.
  • 2023-H 5371 — Sponsored by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), this bill would allow individuals employed in domestic service or in a private home to be subject to the minimum wage law.
  • 2023-H 5589 — This bill sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence) would raise the minimum wage for the years 2025, 2026, 2027, 2028 and 2029, to $15.50, $17.00, $18.50, $20.00, and $21.00, per hour, respectively. This is one of several different bills on the committee’s calendar to raise the minimum wage.
