Committee votes scheduled in House on prescription bills
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Health and Human Services Committee has scheduled votes Wednesday on separate bills allowing pharmacists to prescribe hormonal contraceptives and tobacco cessation drugs, as well as several other bills. The committee has also scheduled hearings on numerous other bills at the meeting.
The meeting is slated Wednesday, March 15, at 4 p.m. in the House lounge on the second floor of the State House.
Among the bills scheduled for votes are:

2023-H 5282 — This bill sponsored by Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick) authorizes pharmacists to prescribe and dispense hormonal contraceptives, provided that the pharmacist has completed a training program approved by the Board of Pharmacy.

2023-H 5555 — Sponsored by Rep. Teresa A. Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, South Kingstown, Narragansett), this bill would allow pharmacists to prescribe tobacco cessation therapies.

2023-H 5349 — This bill sponsored by Rep. Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket) amends the conditions upon which a nurse would be exempt from certain licensing requirements to include eligibility to practice before taking and receiving results of the NCLEX exam.

2023-H 5430 — This bill sponsored by Representative Tanzi establishes the Wholesale Prescription Drug Importation Program for the importation of wholesale prescription drugs from Canada to provide savings to Rhode Island consumers.

2023-H 5507 — This bill sponsored by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston) creates a prescription drug advisory board to evaluate drug prices in an attempt to make them more affordable.

2023-H 5556 — Sponsored by Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy (D-Dist. 38, Hopkinton, Westerly), this bill allows an out-of-state health care practitioner to provide telehealth services to a patient located in this state if the services are consistent with the practitioner’s scope of practice and state and federal professional standards.
