12/2/2013 Reception to be held for boxing champ

STATE HOUSE – Providence native and new WBO junior light middleweight boxing champion Demetrius “Boo Boo” Andrade will be the guest at a reception in his honor to be held at the State House Wednesday, December 4.

The event, to be hosted by Rep. John J. Lombardi (D-Dist. 8, Providence), will be held in the Bell Room (first floor) of the State House from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Expected to attend the open reception are members of Andrade’s family, friends and a number of state legislators.

Representative Lombardi said the State House reception is a way to acknowledge Andrade’s athletic accomplishments and to recognize “that he is an excellent representative of the minority community and a great role model for youth in Providence and across the state.”

Andrade, 25, is a Providence native of Cape Verdean descent who began boxing at the age of 6. In November, he defeated previously unbeaten Vanes Martirosyan to win the vacant WBO junior middleweight title in a 12-round match in Texas.

He won the United States Amateur Boxing Championship in 2005 and 2006; the national Golden Gloves in 2007, the same year he won the Gold in the World Amateur Boxing Championships, and has also competed in the Olympics in 2008.
