Rep. Craven named as chairman of House Judiciary Committee
|
 STATE HOUSE – Rep. Robert E. Craven (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown) has been appointed as the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee by Speaker of the House Nicholas A. Mattiello (D-Dist. 15, Cranston). Representative Craven was the chairman of the House Labor Committee last legislative session.
“It is an honor to be named as the House Judiciary Chairman and I thank Speaker Mattiello and my colleagues in the House for their belief in my abilities to lead one of the most important and busy committees at the State House. The legislation that comes before this committee affects every single Rhode Island resident in significant and meaningful ways and I am eager to begin working with the committee to ensure Rhode Island is on the correct path forward into the future,” said Chairman Craven.
The House Judiciary Committee considers all bills affecting the penal code, judicial system, ethics, open meetings, access to public records and election laws.
Chairman Craven sponsored several pieces of legislation that became law during the 2018 legislative session. His bill that criminalizes revenge porn and sextortion was signed into law, as well as a bill he sponsored that bans the sale and possession of bump stocks, a device that transforms a semi-automatic firearm into a fully-automatic weapon. He also sponsored successful legislation that amended the state’s law on speed cameras in school zones by providing proper notice and fairer violation fines for motorists.
During the 2017 session, Representative Craven sponsored three of the bills in the Justice Reinvestment legislative package that relieves pressures from the correctional system while increasing public safety and saving taxpayer money. He served as a member of the commission which made the recommendations that led to the enactment of six criminal reform bills.
In addition to his duties as a legislator, Chairman Craven is an attorney at Robert E. Craven & Associates in North Kingstown. His past public service includes his time as solicitor for the town of Foster, 1998 to 2004; legal counsel to the Rhode Island Board of Elections, 1995 to 2001; and as an assistant attorney general, 1983 to 1992, which included serving as chief of the Rhode Island Public Corruption Unit. Since 2006, he has served as an assistant town solicitor and a probate judge for the town of Charlestown.
Chairman Craven was first elected to the House of Representatives in November of 2012.
