Media Advisory: Bills on condos, other housing issues to be heard
|
STATE HOUSE – Several bills concerning condominiums, as well bills concerning other housing issues will come before the Senate Committee on Housing and Municipal Government for hearings when it meets Thursday.
The committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, April 3, at the rise of the Senate session (sometime after 4:30 p.m.) in Room 212 on the second floor of the State House.
Among the bills scheduled for hearings are:

2025-S 0508 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Mark McKenney (D-Dist. 30, Warwick) creates a process for condominium associations to give notice to and obtain approval from unit mortgage holders for certain association actions by mailing a written request for approval to the unit mortgagees via regular and certified mail.

2025-S 0724 — This bill sponsored by Sen. Bridget Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown) would restrict increases in monthly common expenses and limit special assessments to cover unforeseen costs not included in a condo association’s approved annual budget for common expenses in associations where the minority of the units are deed-restricted units.

2025-S 0202 — Sponsored by Sen. Meghan E. Kallman (D-Dist. 15, Pawtucket, Providence), this bill would grant a right of first offer to qualified nonprofits for the purchase of certain multi-family residential properties at market prices, within a reasonable period of time to promote the creation and preservation of affordable rental housing.

2025-S 0274 — Sponsored by Sen. Ana B. Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence), this bill would prohibit landlords from inquiring about the immigration status of a tenant subject to any federal laws or regulations, but would allow them to request financial information or proof of identity.
The meeting will be televised by Capitol Television on channels 15 and 61 for high definition on Cox Communications, channel 15 on i3Broadband (Formerly Full Channel) and channel 34 for Verizon viewers.
