Cortvriend gains clean energy insight from Colorado academy
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Terri Cortvriend traveled to Colorado July 23 through 26 to take part in the Clean Energy Legislative Academy, an intensive forum that provides information and resources necessary for developing effective state-level clean energy policy to a bipartisan group of legislators and legislative staff from across the nation.
The academy, which is hosted by the Center for the New Energy Economy at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo., annually brings together 25 to 30 state legislators from across the political spectrum and the country to learn from a team of expert policy faculty about a variety of issue areas, to network and share their stories with one another, and to develop strategies to make their states more competitive in the clean energy marketplace.
The event was a tremendous opportunity to learn about the challenges and opportunities facing states as the energy economy shifts away from carbon-polluting fuels toward renewable energy sources, said Representative Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown).
Representative Cortvriend, who has been a leader in the General Assembly on efforts to mitigate climate change and pollution, said the experience provided her and other participants with a wealth of information on energy technology and hurdles in putting it to use, as well as opportunities to network with other legislators who are actively working to enact renewable energy policy.
“It was almost a ‘firehose’ level of very useful information,” Representative Cortvriend remarked. “I learned from policy experts whom I can now contact whenever I need information to shape energy bills, and I made valuable connections with legislators who are working on green energy legislation in their states, including some who’ve enacted bills I’m working on. CELA is an incredible resource to assist me in creating legislation that will help Rhode Island move ahead boldly and wisely with our energy transition.”
Representative Cortvriend plans to attend another round of CELA workshops in Colorado in September, during which legislators and staff will hold more in-depth policy discussions on some of the topics raised at this session.
