1/29/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Education Committee meets on Wednesday to hear several bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Education Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, January 31 at 3 p.m. in Room 101 of the State House to hear testimony on several bills.
           
The committee is chaired by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston).
           
The following bills will be heard by the committee:
  • 2024-H 7147, sponsored by Rep. John J. Lombardi (D-Dist. 8, Providence), requires the Department of Education to develop a mental health curriculum and to make it available for all schools.  School districts would be required to provide four hours of mental health instruction to seventh grade students.
  • 2024-H 7196, sponsored by Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter), requires public school districts to adopt a policy for responding to the death of a student or staff member. The bill also amends the title of chapter 16-21.7 to "The Nathan Bruno, Jason Flatt, and Alicia Biros Bereavement Act."
  • 2024-H 7214, sponsored by Rep. Kathleen A. Fogarty (D-Dist. 35, South Kingstown), requires the Departments of Elementary and Secondary Education and Health to adopt policies/rules/regulations for the administration of seizure rescue medications for children who have been medically identified as having epilepsy/seizure disorder.
  • 2024-H 7232, sponsored by Chairman McNamara, incorporates the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's SurveyWorks school climate indicators for evaluating the performance of local education agencies and individual public schools.
