3/20/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Wednesday to hear several bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Wednesday, March 22 at the 4 p.m. in the House Lounge of the State House to hear testimony on several bills and to consider one piece of legislation.

The committee will consider legislation (2023-H 5701A) sponsored by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick) which clarifies that the use of a wireless communication device for the purpose of navigation must be while the device is mounted or otherwise affixed to the vehicle and not held in the motorist's hand.

Among the legislation being heard by the committee are the following bills:
  • 2023-H 5111, sponsored by Rep. John J. Lombardi (D-Dist. 8, Providence), makes it a felony to price gouge prescriptions or pharmaceuticals in time of a shortage.
  • 2023-H 5210, sponsored by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), establishes the process to provide a legal mechanism whereby a terminally ill patient may choose to end their life using medications prescribed by a physician.
  • 2023-H 5365, sponsored by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), provides for municipal and state police authorities to acquire and to utilize automated license plate readers. Further, the act identifies what data may be collected and in what ways the data can be used.
  • 2023-H 6064, sponsored by Rep. Enrique Sanchez (D-Dist. 9, Providence), prohibits the arrest of any person engaged in commercial sexual activity or massage without a license if they report to law enforcement enumerated criminal offenses, including assault, sexual assault, homicide, robbery and larceny.
  • 2023-H 5909, sponsored by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry), mandates that the Superior Court establish a felony drunk driving calendar and promulgate a strict time line that the Attorney General has to file an indictment against any defendant and sets a strict schedule for exchange of discovery and scheduling a trial.
The meeting will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, on i3Broadband on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.  The meeting will also be live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
