11/1/2022 Media Advisory: Speaker Shekarchi, Senate Majority Leader McCaffrey to help distribute new Rocky Point plates
STATE HOUSE – House Speaker K. Shekarchi will join Senate Majority Leader Michael J. McCaffrey to help distribute the first 180 Rocky Point license plates on Saturday, November 6.

Rep. Joseph J. Solomon, Jr., who introduced enabling legislation for a Rocky Point plate more than six years ago, and Rep. Evan P. Shanley, who sponsored legislation for the production of the plates to commence, will also participate.

The Warwick Area Career and Technical Center graphic arts students who collaboratively designed the plate have been invited.

At the time Rep. Solomon’s enabling legislation (2016-H 7011) was introduced, the Department of Motor Vehicles required 900 pre-paid orders to proceed with production of the plate; this was later legislatively reduced to 600 pre-orders. Through a series of legislative efforts culminating with Rep. Shanley’s legislation (2022-H 6672 SUB B) and a companion Senate bill (2022-S 2632), the required number of pre-orders for production was reduced to 150 plus a payment. This enabled the Rocky Point Foundation and other non-profits faced with the challenge of a high pre-order threshold to fill orders.

A portion of the proceeds from the license plates will benefit the Rocky Point Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit advocacy organization that was established in 2009 to help preserve and protect the natural and historic heritage and environment of the land formerly occupied by the Rocky Point Amusement Park.
