Rep. Diaz looks forward to addressing social justice, education safety, working families this session

STATE HOUSE — Rep. Grace Diaz (D-Dist. 11, Providence) has announced that she will focus on working families, social justice, education and safety as the House of Representatives kicks off its 2022 session.
“I will dedicate the next six months to working hard to increase child care eligibility and affordability for working families,” said Representative Diaz, who has long advocated for access to quality child care and early learning in Rhode Island. “The retention of quality child care providers and early learning educators is my top priority.”
In addition, Representative Diaz has announced a full legislative agenda, including:
§ Legislation requiring a standard compensation rate for janitors and security guards employed pursuant to state contracts
§ Legislation providing a bill of rights for students enrolled in public schools
§ Legislation increasing salaries for inmates to better prepare them financially for their transition once they get out of prison
§ Working with the Department of Corrections on collecting and correlating data on inmates, such as ethnicity and other information gathered by the U.S. Census in order to make better informed decisions about the specific needs of inmates.
§ Legislation focused on public safety, including protecting the public from secondhand marijuana smoke, limiting the sale of fireworks, and controlling the use of all-terrain vehicles in urban areas.
Representative Diaz says she looks forward to building upon the success of last year’s session, which including the passage of the Student Success Act, which grants in-state tuition rates to all Rhode Islanders, regardless of immigration status. She also sponsored a new law that requires the posting of notices in hotels with a number to call when witnessing signs of human trafficking.
Representative Diaz was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2004. She was named the Democratic Caucus Chair in January 2015. She is the first vice chair of the House Special Legislation Committee and is a member of the House Finance Committee, the House Conduct Committee, the House Rules Committee and the House Small Business Committee. She is the chairwoman of the Legislative Commission on Child Care in Rhode Island.
