5/25/2021 Senate passes Quezada legislation protecting public school students from discrimination
STATE HOUSE — The Senate today passed legislation introduced by Sen. Ana B. Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence) that would protect public school students from discrimination.

The bill (2021-S 0282) would provide students attending public schools enrolled in grades kindergarten through Grade 12 with a students’ bill of rights prohibiting discrimination based on race, sex, gender, economic status or mental, physical, developmental or sensory disabilities.

“Discrimination based on race or disability has plagued education for decades,” said Senator Quezada. “It is particularly a problem with the way students of color or students with disabilities have been historically disciplined. This legislation would once and for all codify in state law that discrimination in schools is not to be tolerated, and would stress to educators that the civil rights of all students should be taken seriously.”

The measure now moves to the House of Representatives, where similar legislation (2021-H 5233) has been introduced by Rep. Grace Diaz (D-Dist. 11, Providence).
