3/26/2018 Rep. Vella-Wilkinson organizes second annual Veterans and Military Families Outreach Day
STATE HOUSE — The House of Representatives will host its second annual Military and Veterans Outreach Day on Wednesday, March 28.

The event, which is being organized by Rep. Camille F.J. Vella-Wilkinson (D-Dist. 21, Warwick), will give veterans and their families an opportunity to network and get a greater understanding of the resources available to them.

Various veterans’ organizations will have tables along the second floor of the State House with information on resources, networking and veterans’ outreach, including R.I. Military Family Services, Disabled American Veterans, Dare to Dream Ranch, R.I. Office of Veterans Affairs, Veteran Angler Charters, Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, Veterans Administration, Military Officers Across America, Small Business Administration, Vet Center, Greater Providence YMCA, Student Veterans Organization, Rhode Island Housing and the R.I. Department of Labor and Training.

“Our inaugural event last year was very successful, encouraging veterans and military families to become engaged with their state government,” said Representative Vella-Wilkinson, a Navy veteran who serves on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee. “Veterans are important part of our constituency and we’d like to see them become more involved in state government, either by running for office or serving in some capacity. This year, we will also have a special presentation, recognizing the sponsors of the R.I. Military Lounge at T.F. Green Airport. More than 12,000 military members, veterans and their families have enjoyed the lounge while waiting for their flights.”

Tours of the State House will also be available from 2 to 3 p.m. The tours are free, but reservations are required and can be made by calling Jerome Squatrito at (401) 222-2933.

A speaking program will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Rotunda. Guest speakers will include House Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly) and Director of Veterans Affairs Kasim Yarn.

Veterans and their families will be given an opportunity to meet their state representatives and discuss the issues that have an impact on their lives. Those who attend are invited to the third-floor House galleries to observe the session of the House of Representatives, where volunteers connected to the Military Lounge will be recognized and Cheryl Albright will sing “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
