5/24/2017 Rep. Azzinaro’s bill to designate ‘RI Nine Beirut Marines’ day passes House
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro’s (D-Dist. 37, Westerly) bill (2017-H 6061aa) that designates October 23rd  as a day to commemorate the nine Rhode Island marines killed in the 1983 terrorist attack in Beirut, Lebanon was passed by the House of Representatives last week.

“This is an appropriate way to honor our nine Rhode Island heroes who tragically lost their lives defending the American way of life.  Their devotion to our country’s freedom and sacred ideals must never be forgotten and this legislation will ensure that current and future generations of Rhode Islanders will always remember the brave men and women who put their lives in risk every day for the safety and betterment of the United States,” said Representative Azzinaro, Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs.

Nine marines from Rhode Island lost their lives in a 1983 terrorist attack on a marine compound in Beirut.  The nine marines were among 241 American service personnel that perished in the attack.
According to the legislation, the day shall be observed by the people of Rhode Island through appropriate exercises in public places and the governor may issue an annual proclamation honoring the memory of the nine marines from Rhode Island who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our country.

The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
