5/30/2024 Rep. Dawson’s bill protects accountability for Washington Bridge failure
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Matthew S. Dawson has introduced legislation that would help to protect the public’s ability to secure accountability for the failure of the Washington Bridge.
“As a representative from East Providence, I have seen firsthand the devastation to daily life that this bridge disaster has caused to the residents, visitors and small businesses of East Providence.  The public deserves significant accountability for the utter failure of maintaining this crucial bridge and this bill will protect the public’s right to hold those accountable for their negligent actions that led to this crisis,” said Representative Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence).
The legislation (2024-H 8318) would clarify the statute of limitations for legal actions that seek damages arising out of or related to the design, construction, supervision, or inspection of the Washington Bridge for a period not to exceed 10 years following discovery of the existence of the claim or December 31, 2033, whichever is later.
“This bill will prevent those who caused the Washington Bridge debacle from escaping responsibility due to legal technicalities and ensure that all the residents who have been affected by this crippling dereliction of public duty will receive the justice that they deserve,” concluded Representative Dawson.
The legislation will be scheduled for a hearing in the House Judiciary Committee next week.
