STATE HOUSE – Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee Samuel A. Azzinaro joined students from the A-Venture Academy on May 24 in Providence for a Memorial Day remembrance ceremony for the nine Rhode Island Marines who were killed in the Beirut bombing attack on October 23, 1983. The event was held at the Rhode Island IX memorial, located at Remembrance Park along the Providence River.
“I’m in awe of these wonderful students and their desire to respect and honor the memory of these nine brave Rhode Island heroes. The legacies of the Rhode Island IX will live on through the hearts and minds of these students and I cannot thank them enough for recognizing the dedication and sacrifice exhibited by the Rhode Island IX and all of our state’s dedicated and selfless service members,” said Chairman Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly).
Chairman Azzinaro was approached by A-Venture academy teacher Nicole Nordquist to join the event, which has become an annual remembrance ceremony for students at A-Venture Academy. The students also participated in a clean up of the memorial before the event, which began in 2022 after the Rhode Island IX memorial was vandalized.
The students who participated are Scott Campopiano, Jr.; Julius Carrion; Christine Carter; Angel Diaz; Precise Hall; James Hallock; Paul Holford; Donna-Rae Gould; Armani Jones; Noel LanFranco; Rashard Littlejohn; Ray-ona Buckner-Mclain; Antwone Thompson; and Nathaniel Victoria.
Chairman Azzinaro presented each student with a citation thanking them for honoring the Rhode Island IX.
