Media Advisory: Senate Environment Committee to hear coastal management bills Wednesday
|
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee will meet Wednesday to vote on two bills relating to the definition of a “core forest” and the prohibition of captive hunting of domestic and wild animals, and to hear eight bills related to coastal resiliency and the Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC).
The Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, April 3, at 4 p.m. in the Senate Lounge on the second floor of the State House to vote on two bills:

2024-S 2151 — This bill introduced by Senate Environment Committee Chairwoman Alana M. DiMario (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown, New Shoreham) would modify the definition of “core forest” to refer to unfragmented forest blocks or single or multiple parcels totaling 250 acres or greater and at least 25 yards from mapped roads.

2024-S 2732 — This bill introduced by Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston) would prohibit the captive hunting of domestic or wild animals.
The committee is also scheduled to hear eight bills, including:

2024-S 2298 — The Act on Coasts introduced by Sen. Victoria Gu (D-Dist. 38, Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown) would mandate the creation and maintenance of a statewide coastal resiliency plan.

2024-S 2304 — This bill introduced by Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski (D-Dist. 37, South Kingstown) would require that a super majority of three-fifths of the duly appointed council of CRMC is required to override a recommendation by the CRMC staff.

2024-S 2928 — Also introduced by Senator Gu, this bill would replace CRMC with a new Department of Coastal Resources, which would be similar in structure to the current Department of Environmental Management.
Written testimony must be submitted to the committee clerk at slegislation@rilegislature.gov prior to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, in order for it to be provided to the members of the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records. Sign-up sheets for in-person testimony will be available in the hearing room.
