3/4/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Education Committee to hear legislation on chronic school absenteeism
STATE HOUSE — The House Education Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday to hear legislation related to chronic absenteeism in schools.

The committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, March 6, at 4 p.m. in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.

The panel will hear testimony on two bills introduced by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston) related to chronic absenteeism. The first (2024-H 7195) would establish a one-year pilot outreach and tracking program at two public high and middle schools to address issues of asthma and attendance among students. The committee will also hear testimony on the following bills:
§  (2024-H 7612) — this bill, introduced by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown), would require school districts to provide the parent/guardian of a student with an individualized education program (IEP) with information concerning the achieving a better life experience (ABLE) account program benefits and the program application process.

§  (2024-H 7614) — this bill, introduced by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), would require the Student Advisory Council to meet at least quarterly, provide the chairperson with equal voting powers as members on the council, and provide that a student under 18 years is exempt from the Senate advise and consent process.

§  (2024-H 7615) — this bill, introduced by Representative Cortvriend, would create an 11-member joint commission to study the transportation needs of students and recommend what changes are necessary, and who would report back to the General Assembly by Jan 5, 2025.
