Rep. O’Brien praises Municipal Road Fund Program
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. William W. O’Brien, Chairman of the House Finance Subcommittee on Environment and Transportation, is praising the newly announced Municipal Road Fund Program that is included in the governor’s FY 2024 budget proposal.
Representative O’Brien joined Governor Daniel McKee in North Providence today at an event highlighting the proposal, which would allocate $20 million to be used to fund important road, bridge, and sidewalk projects on locally maintained city and town roads.
“This program could be used in all Rhode Island communities to fix our crumbling roads and sidewalks by providing a portion of matching funds for transportation infrastructure improvements. I know North Providence has been sharing concerns about the need to restore the Greystone neighborhood bridge and this program would be a perfect way to get this important project done for the people of North Providence. I look forward to the Municipal Road Fund Program being thoroughly vetted by the House Finance Committee in the coming weeks and I believe it could have a real beneficial impact to the residents of our state,” said Representative O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence).
The program works with each city and town providing 67 percent of the project costs with the State matching the remaining 33 percent. With this level of local investment, the fund can make up to $60 million available for local road projects.
