House Finance Committee to Hear Bill Designed to Protect Rhode Island Taxpayers, Submitted by Representative Sherry Roberts
STATE HOUSE  --  Representative Sherry Roberts (R-District 29 Coventry, West Greenwich) will testify today, Tuesday, May 30, 2017, before the House Finance Committee on legislation she submitted to protect Rhode Island taxpayers who overpay on their personal income tax payments.
House Bill No. 5287, an act relating to taxation – personal income tax - part 44-30-81 procedure and administration, was drafted to even the playing field between the state and taxpayers.
Representative Roberts said, “My legislation states clearly that any 2016 tax overpayment would be refunded with interest calculated at twelve percent (12%) compounded daily if not received by June 30, 2017.  If the state is in receipt of more than its fair share of tax money, I feel the state owes that money back to the taxpayer, plus interest.  The state of Rhode Island has never been hesitant to attach interest to money it’s owed, so it should work the other way around, as well.  What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.”
Representative Roberts’ legislation is co-sponsored by Representatives Justin Price (R-District 39 Exeter, Hopkinton, Richmond), Stephen R. Ucci (D-District 42 Johnston, Cranston), Charlene M. Lima (D-District 14 Cranston, Providence) and Bob Quattrocchi (R-District 41 Scituate, Cranston).
