Rep. O’Brien praises restoration of education funds in FY 25 budget
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence) is praising the passage of Article 8 in the FY 25 state budget that restored several million dollars of proposed education aid cuts within the governor’s budget proposal.
“The cuts to our state’s students and schools in the governor’s proposed budget was simply unacceptable and I am proud to have voted for the increased education aid within the budget that was passed in the House, including an additional $1 million for North Providence schools. As a member of the House Finance Committee, I have fought hard to restore this aid during months of budget hearings and I thank my colleagues and Speaker Shekarchi for putting children first in this year’s budget. There are many good things for the people of Rhode Island within this budget, but investing in our kids and schools is one of the best things we can do for the future of our state,” said Representative O’Brien.
Representative O’Brien is also pleased that the budget included legislation (2024-H 7341) he sponsored that provides state public safety professionals with a position of parity with public safety employees of the municipal retirement systems.
“Our state’s dedicated public safety officials deserve to have their pensions in line with all of the municipal public safety employees and the budget corrected this injustice. I was proud to introduce this bill and I am beyond pleased that it was included in the state budget,” said Representative O’Brien.
