1/31/2023 Rep. Hull named Deputy Speaker
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Raymond A. Hull (D-Dist. 6, Providence, North Providence) was appointed by Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) to the role of Deputy Speaker of the Rhode Island House of Representatives at today’s session.
           
Representative Hull will be the first African American individual to serve as Rhode Island’s Deputy Speaker.
           
“I am truly honored and humbled to accept the position of Deputy Speaker and I thank Speaker Shekarchi and my colleagues in the House for trusting me with this important leadership role. Our state is facing numerous issues and challenges and I am eager to further serve the people of Rhode Island as their new Deputy Speaker,” said Deputy Speaker Hull.
           
The Deputy Speaker, along with the Speaker Pro Tempore, serve at the rostrum in the absence of the Speaker. Deputy Speaker Hull was also appointed to the House Finance, State Government and Elections, and Veterans’ Affairs Committees.  He also serves at the Chairman of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. State Holiday Commission.

Deputy Speaker Hull was first elected the House of Representatives in November 2010.  He is currently the commanding officer of the Housing Unit in the Providence Police Department, where he has served for 28 years.
