10/7/2022 Rep. Casimiro honored as ‘Legislative Champion’ by RI Coalition for Children and Families
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter) was named by the Rhode Island Coalition for Children and Families as the organization’s 2022 Legislative Champion.  The award was presented at the coalition’s 2022 Awards and Policy Luncheon held in Providence yesterday.

“It truly is humbling to be recognized by an organization as great as the Coalition.  The work they do for the children and families of Rhode Island is vital to the state’s wellbeing and I look forward to continue working with them in the future to ensure our kids and families have the supports they need to lead healthy and fulfilling lives,” said Representative Casimiro.

Representative Casimiro was recognized for being the prime sponsor of legislation which provides for periodic rate review/setting processes to ensure accurate and adequate reimbursement of social, human and clinical services.  The legislation was included in the approved FY 2023 state budget.

“Our healthcare system is suffering a crisis of care that’s only worsened due to the pandemic.  Our system is understaffed and under-supported and it is hurting our most vulnerable residents.  Our reimbursement rates have remained too-low and unchanged for many years, some decades, and the residents of our state cannot access the crucial services they need if there is no one there to provide the care. We have to stop the exodus of human services workers in our state and I believe this is possible with the proper oversight of the rate review/setting process and appropriate reimbursement rate increases that accurately reflect the high-level of care and dedication that our employees provide to our residents.  Thankfully, this budget item will do just that, providing the investment and care that both our patients and employees deserve,” said Representative Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter).

RI Coalition for Children and Families is a member organization of nonprofit providers of social and health services to children, youth, and their families and allied advocacy organizations. The Coalition seeks to prevent and/or address the needs of children, youth, and their families who are at risk or in crisis due to factors including but not limited to poverty, behavioral or physical health issues, and family violence. The work of the Coalition includes: promoting the availability of state and federal resources to address basic family and safety needs and promoting a comprehensive and effective array of community-based social services.
