7/5/2022 Sen. Acosta and Rep. Giraldo’s legislation requiring designated parking spots for young children in baby strollers signed into law
STATE HOUSE – Legislation (2022-S 2345, 2022-H 7743) sponsored by Sen. Jonathon Acosta (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket) and Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) which would require that all parking lots with more than 100 spaces designate specifically reserved parking spaces for individuals transporting young children under the age of three years old in baby strollers has been signed into law.

“Everyone who has or has cared for young children knows the challenges of navigating a busy parking lot with young children in strollers.  This bill is a simple fix that will help keep young children safe in busy parking lots while also offering their parents or caregivers a slight sense of stress relief while going about their daily business.  Although it may seem small, this legislation will enhance our residents’ quality of life while also helping to avoid tragic accidents in our state’s parking lots,” said Senator Acosta.

“Parking lots are often hectic places, creating dangerous environments and situations for young children and their parents and guardians.  This bill will ease the stress parents and guardians face when bringing their children to the store in a stroller, but most importantly, it will help protect our kids from the terrible possible tragedies that can occur in a busy parking lot,” said Representative Giraldo.

According to the legislation, if a parking lot has between 101 and 500 parking spaces, two designated spaces for young children in strollers would be required.  If a parking lot has 501 to 1,000 parking spaces, three designated spots would be required, with one additional space required for every 500 parking spaces over 1,000 spaces.

The legislation would not apply to parking lots for single-family, duplex, townhouse or multifamily residences or industrial zoned properties.
