4/14/2022 House passes Rep. Casimiro’s bill requiring childhood cancer data collection
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Julie A. Casimiro’s bill (2022-H 7134A) which requires collecting data on childhood cancer in the state was passed by the House of Representatives yesterday.

The legislation would require the Department of Health to collect and disaggregate data on childhood cancer within the state’s cancer registry.

“The only thing more heartbreaking than a cancer diagnosis is when a child is the recipient of such devastating news.  As we have for many years with adults suffering from cancer, the state needs that same data for cases of childhood cancer in order to do everything we can to combat this horrible disease.  This bill will do that, and if it becomes law, it will meaningfully contribute to our ongoing battle to eradicate childhood cancer,” said Representative Casimiro.

The Rhode Island Cancer Registry (RICR) has collected cancer case reports since October 1986. Since 1995, this effort has been supported in part by the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a federally mandated program that supports population-based cancer surveillance systems. RICR collects and processes high quality and standardized newly diagnosed cancer data on the type and extent, as well as patient demographics and selective cancer treatment information. RICR produces comprehensive epidemiological reports on cancer – incidence, prevalence, and mortality – by different attributes.

Representative Casimiro’s bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.
