4/7/2022 Senate passes Cano’s Early Educator Investment Act
STATE HOUSE – The Senate today passed legislation sponsored by Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket) which would make critical investments in supporting, training and retaining early educators.

The bill is part of the Senate’s legislative package designed to expand and strengthen the state’s early childhood care and education system.

“The Early Educator Investment Act is critically important to our efforts to stabilize the early childhood workforce. All of our state’s educators, at all levels, deserve to feel secure, supported, and respected while they do the vital work of educating and preparing our youngest children.  Early educators, who are predominantly women and include many are people of color, are among the lowest paid workers in the state. Child care, preschool, family home visiting and Early Intervention programs struggle to recruit and retain staff, and this bill will ensure that our youngest children have the best possible starts to their educations through the state’s investment in high-quality early educators,” said Senator Cano.

The Early Educator Investment Act (2022-S 2235) directs the state’s Children’s Cabinet to set a target wage scale for early educators and identify strategies for increasing compensation. It also directs the Department of Human Services to create an early educator workforce registry and provides for a $5 million wage supplement program for registered workers.

The legislation has been referred to the House of Representatives for consideration.
