Carson to present results of flooding survey at Point Association meeting next week
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Lauren H. Carson is urging residents of the Point neighborhood in Newport to come to the Point Association’s fall meeting next week to discuss the area’s flooding problems and the results of a recent survey on residents’ flooding concerns.
Representative Carson will be a guest speaker at the meeting, scheduled Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 6 p.m. in the church hall at St. John the Evangelist Church, 61 Poplar St.
She will present the results of an online survey of Point residents conducted this summer to gather information on their experiences, concerns and priorities related to climate change, stormwater flooding and sea level rise.
“Flooding has long been a problem in the Point. It’s obviously a tremendous challenge for residents, who suffer property damage and mold issues, struggle with homeowners’ insurance and sometimes can’t even drive down their road. Considering the Point is home to the greatest concentration of colonial American homes in the country, there’s a lot of concern about the lasting damage this flooding is doing, what can be done to prevent it and address its impacts and the costs to property owners,” said Representative Carson (D-Dist. 75, Newport), who is a former resident of the Point. “More than 40 percent of respondents’ reported flooding in the last five years. Only about a third reported having flood insurance, and more than three-quarters reported their homeowners’ insurance premiums have increased somewhat or significantly. Working collectively is going to be key to addressing flooding and its high costs.”
Representative Carson will present the full results of the survey at the meeting and hopes to engage the community in ongoing and future efforts to bolster resilience in the Point.
Representative Carson, a member of the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee, led the House Commission on Economic Risk Due to Flooding and Sea Rise during her first term in the House of Representatives and is cofounder of the Aquidneck Island Climate Caucus. She was the House sponsor of Rhode Island’s landmark Act on Climate, passed in 2021.
