Bill signed to better assist crime victims with moving expenses
|
 STATE HOUSE – Legislation sponsored by Sen. Hanna M. Gallo and Rep. Grace Diaz was ceremonially signed into law today, better assisting victims with relocation expenses if it is necessary for them to move as a result of a crime.
The legislation (2026-H 8155, 2026-S 2832) allows the state Crime Victims Compensation Program to provide up to $8,000 to crime victims to pay their moving expenses. The limit was previously $5,000.
The sponsors introduced the bill on behalf of General Treasurer James A. Diossa, who hosted a ceremony today in which Gov. Dan McKee ceremonially signed the bill, which passed the General Assembly in June.
“Better enabling survivors of crime to move to a new home is an important way of protecting them from the perpetrator and helping them recover, particularly if their home was where the crime took place,” said Sen. Hanna M. Gallo (D-Dist. 27, Cranston, West Warwick).
“Moving, particularly on an emergency basis, can be prohibitively expensive and difficult for people suffering in the aftermath of a crime. Enabling the Victims Compensation fund to provide a more realistic level of support will make the difference for many, helping to start fresh in a place where they can feel safer,” said Rep. Grace Diaz (D-Dist. 11, Providence).
