New law requires school districts to cooperate with the courts
|
STATE HOUSE – Legislation (2026-H 7036, 2026-S 2057) sponsored by Rep. Julie A. Casimiro and Senate Majority Whip David P. Tikoian that would require school districts to cooperate more with the courts regarding children in state care and their education has been signed into law.
“We have all read stories about children in state care falling through the cracks because important information or recommendations concerning a child’s educational welfare has not been shared between interested parties or has been ignored. Often, judges are more aware of a child’s circumstances than the school system, so it’s imperative that our school districts listen to and implement recommendations from the courts regarding a child’s education. As Rhode Island continues to lag behind in acceptable educational outcomes for its children in state care, this bill will ensure that the courts have the opportunity to weigh in on decisions that will have positive educational results for our kids in need of help,” said Representative Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter).
“The utmost priority for everyone is the health and well-being of children in state care. In order for these vulnerable children to get the educational support that they need and deserve, there needs to be clear lines of communication between everyone involved in the child’s life, which includes the school systems and the courts,” said Whip Tikoian (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Lincoln).
The legislation would require every school district to render all assistance and cooperation within its jurisdictional power to the court with any information concerning a child that the court may require.
