Rep. O’Brien participates in Liberty Tree planting in North Providence
|
 STATE HOUSE – Rep. William W. O’Brien joined Secretary of State Gregg Amore on Saturday, June 13, to plant a “Liberty Tree” to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States at the historic home of Captain Stephen Olney in North Providence.
“It was a wonderful day joining Secretary Amore to recognize the historic accomplishments of Captain Olney while also celebrating the birth of our state and country. It’s an honor to serve the people of North Providence in the same capacity as Captain Olney and I will be forever grateful for his contributions to the town. This ‘Liberty Tree’ is an important symbol that will remind North Providence residents for generations about how our great nation came to be and what it means to preserve our treasured republic,” said Representative O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence).
“Liberty Trees remind us of Rhode Island’s revolutionary roots, and the Capt. Stephen Olney house is a perfect historic location to leave a lasting reminder of Rhode Island’s semiquincentennial commemoration,” said Secretary of State Gregg M. Amore. “It was an honor to join Rep. O’Brien and so many other North Providence leaders for this ceremony.”
Captain Stephen Olney was a Revolutionary War hero who represented North Providence in the Rhode Island General Assembly for 20 years.
The Liberty Tree Project is a RI250 Commission initiative honoring America’s 250th anniversary in 2026. The project aims to plant a Red Maple tree, the official state tree of Rhode Island, in each of state’s 39 municipalities, commemorating the state’s pivotal role in the American Revolution.
