Assembly passes Casimiro, Appollonio bill that exempts foster children from driver education fees
|
STATE HOUSE – The General Assembly today passed legislation sponsored by Rep. Julie A. Casimiro and Sen. Peter A. Appollonio Jr. that would help children in state care with the costs of driver education classes.
“This bill is extremely important because without any family or support networks, children in state care are often left to their own devices, without any money and no one to turn to for help. Transportation is one of the biggest obstacles they need to overcome to get to work and this bill would make it easier for these kids to get around and provide for themselves,” said Representative Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter).
“Children in state care have already endured so much and unfortunately, the cost of taking driver’s education classes may be too much for some of them to absorb. This bill is the right thing to do because it will allow these kids to become safe and independent on the road at minimal cost to taxpayers. It is about opportunity, self-sufficiency and providing a pathway to success,” said Senator Appollonio (D-Dist. 29, Warwick).
The legislation (2026-H 8603A, 2026-S 2182B) would exempt children in foster or adoptive homes from fees associated with driver education classes at the Community College of Rhode Island.
The bills now head to the governor for consideration.
