Assembly passes Leader Ciccone, Rep. Perez bill to reduce nomination signature requirements for presidential delegates
|
STATE HOUSE – The General Assembly today passed legislation sponsored by Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III and Rep. Ramon A. Perez that amends signature requirements and deadlines for presidential preference delegate primaries.
“Our democracy only grows stronger with more people involved, and this bill will give more people the opportunity to take part in the presidential selection process. By reducing the number of signatures needed to qualify as a presidential delegate, it will make it easier for a more diverse slate of presidential delegate candidates to join in on the process,” said Leader Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston).
“Everyone should have the opportunity, if they so choose, to take part in the democratic process to elect presidential candidates. This bill will open up the field and give the public more of an opportunity to take part in the national election process, which will hopefully bring new and diverse viewpoints to nominating presidential candidates,” said Representative Perez (D-Dist. 13, Providence, Johnston).
The legislation (2026-S 2309, 2026-H 7092) would reduce the number of signatures needed on nomination papers for a candidate to be a delegate to a national presidential convention to 50 voters. This act would also amend and reduce the number of days before an election for which nomination papers must be submitted before a presidential preference primary to 54 days and would reduce the number of days by which the local board of canvassers would need to certify the signatures 50 days before the presidential preference primary.
The bill now heads to the governor for consideration.
