Senate passes Mack bill requiring receipts for cash rental payments
|
STATE HOUSE – The Senate today passed legislation sponsored by Sen. Tiara Mack that would require receipts for rental payments paid in cash.
“This is a tenant protection bill that will keep the process of paying rent in cash documented and accountable. Clear payment records are important for both the tenant and landlord, particularly if disputes occur. This is a simple bill, but it makes sense to protect everyone involved in the transaction,” said Senator Mack (D-Dist. 6, Providence).
The legislation (2026-S 3158A) would require landlords to provide a receipt to any tenant who makes a rental payment in cash at the time the payment is received. The receipt must indicate the amount of rent paid, when the payment was received, the printed or typed names of both the landlord and tenant, and who accepted the payment.
The bill now heads to the House for consideration, where Rep. Cherie L. Cruz (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket) has introduced the legislation (2026-H 8386).
