Media Advisory: Sens. Murray, Mack, Rep. Morales to join workers at State House to call for taxing the 1%
|
STATE HOUSE — Sens. Melissa Murray and Tiara T. Mack and Rep. David Morales will be joined by faith leaders, union members and Rhode Island workers at the State House Thursday to call for the passage of legislation to tax the income of Rhode Island’s richest 1%.
The event will be held tomorrow, Thursday, May 28, at 3 p.m. on the front steps of the State House on the Smith Street side of the building.
The group is calling for the passage of legislation (2026-S 2238, 2026-H 7313), sponsored by Senator Murray and Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls), that would create a 3% surtax on taxable income for the top 1% of earners in Rhode Island, which would apply to income above approximately $640,000 per year.
