MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Tuesday to hear legislation
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet tomorrow, Tuesday, May 19 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge to hear testimony on three bills relating to renters and landlords.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett).
The following bills will be heard by the committee:

2026-H 7199, sponsored by Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls), grants tenants that are the victim of various forms of abuse including, but not limited to, sexual and domestic abuse and stalking, the right to terminate a lease agreement early without penalty or liability for rent.

2026-H 8385, sponsored by Rep. Cherie L. Cruz (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket), allows for the sealing of eviction records for defective complaints or lack of jurisdiction for individuals between the ages of 18 and 21 who didn't sign the lease.

2026-H 8386, sponsored by Representative Cruz, requires landlords to provide a receipt upon receiving a cash payment for rent from a tenant.
