MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Thursday to consider and hear legislation
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet on Thursday, May 14 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge to consider and hear testimony on several bills.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett).
The following bills will be considered by the committee:

2026-H 7210, sponsored by Chairwoman McEntee, adopts the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act.

2026-H 7437, sponsored by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence), extends the sunsetting of the “Don't Block the Box” automated traffic detection systems from January 15, 2027, to January 15, 2030.

2026-H 7507, sponsored by Rep. Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence), requires that notice of a judgment lien be sent within 10 business days of the recording of the lien.

2026-H 8501, sponsored by Speaker Christopher R. Blazejewski (D-Dist. 2, Providence), re-enacts certain chapters of Title 45 relating to towns and cities and provides various technical statutory construction edits throughout the General Laws.

2026-H 8091, sponsored by Rep. Justine Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), aligns the implementation date of youth camp licensing within the operational, and statutory framework of the Rhode Island Department of Human Services and the Department of Children, Youth and Families.
The committee will also hear testimony on the following bills:

2026-H 8502, sponsored by Rep. Megan L. Cotter (D-Dist. 39, Exeter, Richmond, Hopkinton), prohibits those people convicted of sex offenses from living within proximity to their victim's residences, workplaces or schools and automatically be prohibited from having any direct or indirect contact with the victim(s).

2026-H 8503, sponsored by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), creates a special legislative commission to study and provide recommendations relating to supporting community-based solutions to reduce the incarceration of women in Rhode Island.

2026-H 8523, sponsored by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick), permits a driver to admit to a violation for failure to stop for a school bus and pay the violation of $300 directly to the municipality or its designee, without the need for a court appearance.
