MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets twice this week to consider and hear legislation
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet twice this week to consider and hear testimony on several bills.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett).
On Tuesday, April 28 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge, the committee will consider the following bills:

2026-H 7079A, sponsored by Rep. Robert E. Craven Sr. (D-Dist. 32, North Kingstown), permits those individuals convicted of multiple felonies and misdemeanors to have their records expunged and provide criteria for the court to consider in determining whether the person is of good moral character.

2026-H 7359, sponsored by Rep. Jacquelyn Baginski (D-Dist. 17, Cranston), requires public auctions by any city or town of real estate or an interest therein to only be done in person and not by electronic or remote procedures unless authorized by court order.

2026-H 7551, sponsored by Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy (D-Dist. 38, Hopkinton, Westerly), establishes the criminal offense of real estate title fraud, and allows municipalities to refuse to record “suspicious documents” from persons who are not trusted submitters.

2026-H 8247, sponsored by Rep. Julie A. Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter), changes the term of Drug Court to Recovery Court.

2026-H 7558, sponsored by Rep. Brandon Potter (D-Dist. 16, Cranston), repeals the section of law relating to suspension of operator licenses for failure to pay fines.

2026-H 8082, sponsored by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry), amends existing expungement laws to be consistent with the new 10-year lookback period required for DUI charges.

2026-H 8098, sponsored by Representative Casimiro, establishes the Super Speeder Accountability Act to be used as a sentencing option or enhancement for drivers charged with certain driving violations.

2026-H 8384, sponsored by Rep. Arthur J. Corvese (D-Dist. 55, North Providence), creates an enhanced penalty defined as “road rage” to be applied in addition to penalties for convictions of certain motor vehicle offenses.
On Thursday, April 30 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge, the committee will hear a variety of legislation. Among the legislation scheduled to be heard are the following bills:

2026-H 7743, sponsored by Rep. Megan L. Cotter (D-Dist. 39, Exeter, Richmond, Hopkinton), requires all peace officers to carry epinephrine autoinjectors in their vehicles or on their person, and requires police departments to budget sufficient funds to purchase the epinephrine and autoinjectors and for training of every peace officer.

2026-H 7753, sponsored by Rep. Earl A. Read III (D-Dist. 26, Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick), makes it a felony for any person to remove or attempt to remove any firearm or other weapon or any communication device from any peace officer or investigator of the Department of Attorney General.

2026-H 7760, sponsored by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), establishes the process to provide a legal mechanism whereby a terminally ill patient may choose to end their life using medications prescribed by a physician.

2026-H 8329, sponsored by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence), establishes the Terminally Ill Patients' Right to Try Act.

2026-H 8434, sponsored by Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence), provides for sentencing enhancements for any person using prohibited firearms, being a prohibited person or engaging in certain other firearm related offenses resulting in death and constituting first or second degree murder.
