Media Advisory: Senate Education Committee to bills on school safety, Providence schools, regionalization
|
STATE HOUSE – School safety, exploration of regionalization and the return of Providence schools to local control are among the subjects of bills scheduled for hearings before the Senate Education Committee Wednesday.
The committee meets Wednesday, April 8, at 4 p.m. in Room 313 on the third floor of the State House. Among the bills scheduled for hearings are:

2026-S 2526 — Sponsored by Sen. Samuel W. Bell (D-Dist. 5, Providence), this bill would nullify the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recommendation that the turnaround plan for Providence Public Schools be continued.

2026-S 2216 — Sponsored by Senate Minority Leader Jessica de la Cruz (R-Dist. 23, North Smithfield, Burrillville, Glocester), this bill would provide for a comprehensive criminal and employment background check procedure for all school employees.

2026-S 3010 — Sponsored by Sen. Bridget Valverde (D-Dist. 35, North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown), this bill would require the names of any nonteacher school employee who is terminated for good and just cause to be furnished to the Department of Education.

2026-S 3009 — This resolution sponsored by Sen. Jonathon Acosta (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket) creates a nine-member commission to study shared services and the potential for regionalization of school districts.
