MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets twice this week to hear and consider legislation, including many bills relating to firearms on Wednesday

STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet on Wednesday, April 8 at 4 p.m. in the House Lounge to hear testimony on many bills relating to firearms.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett).
Among the legislation scheduled to be heard are the following bills:

2026-H 7035, sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Boylan (D-Dist. 66, Barrington, East Providence), prohibits purchases of more than one firearm in any 30-day period.

2026-H 7647, sponsored by Chairwoman McEntee, allows access to juvenile criminal records to conduct firearm background checks.

2026-H 8067, sponsored by Rep. Jenni A. Furtado (D-Dist. 64, East Providence), disqualifies individuals with prior felony convictions from purchasing or possessing a firearm.

2026-H 8070, sponsored by Rep. Marie Hopkins (R-Dist. 21, Warwick), makes it permissible for any student, professor, or other employee of any public or private college or university, to carry, possess and have in their custody, possession and/or under their control, a stun-gun or pepper spray for purposes of self-defense.

2026-H 8071, sponsored by Rep. Justine A. Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), prohibits the sale or transfer of ammunition unless the purchaser successfully undergoes a background check.

2026-H 8073, sponsored by Rep. Teresa A. Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, South Kingstown, Narragansett), restricts the possession of prohibited firearms.
On Thursday, April 9 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge, the committee will consider and hear testimony on a variety of legislation.
Among the bills scheduled for consideration are the following pieces of legislation:

2026-H 7639, sponsored by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), requires a direct-to-consumer genetic testing company to provide a consumer with certain information regarding the company's policies and procedures regarding use of genetic data.

2026-H 7640, sponsored by Chairwoman McEntee, for purposes of the Judicial Security Act, permits an authorized agent to file a written notice with a state, county, or municipal agency on behalf of a protected individual.

2026-H 7643, sponsored by Rep. Susan R. Donovan (D-Dist. 69, Bristol, Portsmouth), simplifies the assessment of filing fees required to appeal from small claims and consumer matters adjudicated by the District Court.
Among the legislation scheduled to be heard are the following bills:

2026-H 7201, sponsored by Chairwoman McEntee, establishes the Commercial Sex Buyer’s Accountability Program which consists of an instructional program on prostitution and human trafficking schemes.

2026-H 7820, sponsored by Rep. Charlene M. Lima (D-Dist. 14, Cranston, Providence), makes persons who were convicted of crimes 40 or more years ago eligible to have their records expunged, with certain exceptions.

2026-H 8055, sponsored by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), makes assault with intent to commit murder punishable by no less than 10 years and not more than 40 years, and the person would not be afforded the benefit of suspension or deferment of sentence or probation.

2026-H 8057, sponsored by Representative Ajello, decriminalizes certain commercial sexual activity. It would also include human trafficking as a racketeering activity and would allow expungements of certain convictions in § 11-34.1 after one year.
