LaMountain introduces Super Speeder Accountability Act to protect public safety and save lives
|
STATE HOUSE — Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain has introduced the Super Speeder Accountability Act, aimed at addressing dangerous speeding and protecting Rhode Islanders on public roadways. Speeding remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes, contributing to nearly one-third of traffic deaths nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
“This is a public safety issue,” said Senator LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston). “Excessive speeding puts every driver, pedestrian, and family at risk. We need stronger, smarter tools to prevent repeat dangerous behavior.”
The legislation (2026-S 2942) requires high-risk and repeat offenders to install Intelligent Speed Assistance devices, which prevent vehicles from exceeding posted speed limits as a condition of license reinstatement. Unlike fines or suspensions, which often fail to change behavior, the bill puts in place real restrictions that stop dangerous driving in real time and ensure accountability.
“Excessive speeding is one of the most preventable causes of serious injury and death on our roads,” said Senator LaMountain. “This legislation puts in place real restrictions, not just fines that fail to change behavior, ensuring repeat offenders are held accountable and dangerous driving is stopped before it leads to tragedy.”
By focusing on prevention, accountability and proven technology, the Super Speeder Accountability Act represents a targeted effort to reduce crashes, change behavior, and make Rhode Island roads safer for everyone.
“This is about saving lives, plain and simple,” LaMountain added. “Rhode Islanders deserve to feel safe on our roads, and this bill takes a meaningful step toward making that a reality.”
Similar legislation (2026-H 8098) has been introduced in the House by Rep. Julie Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter).
