Media Advisory: Senate AI and Emerging Technologies Committee to hear bills governing the safe storage of personal data Tuesday

STATE HOUSE — The Senate Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies Committee will meet tomorrow to hear bills related to identity theft prevention and the storage and deletion of personal consumer data.
The committee is scheduled to meet tomorrow, Tuesday, March 31, at 3 p.m. in Room 212 on the second floor of the State House. The committee is scheduled to hear the following bills:

2026-S 2638 — This legislation introduced by Sen. Victoria Gu (D-Dist. 38, Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown), who also chairs the committee, would update the Identity Theft Protection Act by establishing new definitions and raising the penalties for violations.

2026-S 2766 — This legislation also introduced by Chairwoman Gu would require any entity that knowingly collects, shares or sells to third parties the personal data of a consumer to register with the Department of Business Regulations and permits for the consumer to request deletion of the personal data.
The Senate Committee on Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies considers legislation and matters relating to emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, and their societal, ethical and policy implications.
