MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets twice this week to hear several bills
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet twice this week to hear testimony on a variety of legislation.
The committee is chaired by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett).
Among the legislation scheduled to be heard on Tuesday, March 24 at the RISE of the House (approximately 4:45 p.m.) in the House Lounge are the following bills:

2026-H 7128, sponsored by Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence), mandates arming campus police at public higher educational institutions and includes campus police in the definition of “law enforcement officer” for the purposes of the “Law Enforcement Officers' Bill of Rights.”

2026-H 7550, sponsored by Rep. Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket), criminalizes and sets mandatory minimum sentences for the unlawful interference with traffic upon the federal and state highways of this state.

2026-H 8058, sponsored by Rep. Justine A. Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), makes it unnecessary to prove that a person’s transmission of electronic communications be for the sole purpose of harassment before being found guilty of cyberstalking or cyberharassment.

2026-H 8116, sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), requires correctional staff to wear and activate body cameras, sets rules for recording and access, creates an independent oversight board, mandates training and reporting, and establishes a grant funded pilot program.

2026-H 8272, sponsored by Rep. Raymond A. Hull (D-Dist. 6, Providence, North Providence), makes sexual contact or penetration between any law enforcement officer that is on duty and a person that is a detainee, arrestee, in custody or a suspect a felony.

2026-H 7644, sponsored by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), increases the fees charged for filings and writs of execution in the District Court, Superior Court and Family Court.

2026-H 7819, sponsored by Rep. Charlene M. Lima (D-Dist. 14, Cranston, Providence), creates a civil cause of action for any municipality that incurs extraordinary emergency response costs arising from a mass casualty event to bring a civil action in the Superior Court to recover such costs from a private property owner.

2026-H 8052, sponsored by Rep. Lauren H. Carson (D-Dist. 75, Newport), provides a civil cause of action for individuals injured by artificial intelligence.

2026-H 8103, sponsored by Rep. Matthew S. Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), increases the time that mortgage foreclosure notices are required to be provided to active military service members, from nine months to one year, after completion of their active duty.

2026-H 8106, sponsored by Representative Casey, prohibits restrictive covenants related to grocery stores.
