Senate passes Sen. Euer’s Jamestown senior tax relief bill
|
STATE HOUSE — The Senate today approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Dawn Euer to provide tax relief to Jamestown’s seniors.
“I strongly commend the Jamestown Town Council for the creative ways they are approaching the housing and affordability crisis on the island, including this legislation that I am proud to sponsor for them. Property tax relief is an important tool for municipalities to help seniors on fixed incomes avoid being priced out of their homes by rising costs. I am happy to see this legislation pass the Senate, and I will continue to support the Town Council’s efforts to prevent residents from being priced off the island,” said Senator Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown).
Jamestown currently offers a sliding scale of property tax relief for seniors with incomes under 220% of the federal poverty guideline, with larger exemptions for those with lower incomes. This legislation (2026-S 2422) extends this program by granting an exemption of 10% of the assessment cap or the assessed valuation—whichever is less—for seniors with incomes of between 220% and 240% of the federal poverty guideline.
The bill now goes to the House for consideration, where companion legislation (2026-H 7151) from Rep. Alex S. Finkelman (D-Dist. 74, Jamestown, Middletown) passed Feb. 3.
