Rep. Alzate and Sen. Urso host female students for International Women’s Day
|
STATE HOUSE –Rep. Karen Alzate and Sen. Lori Urso hosted three female Pawtucket students yesterday at the State House to serve as “Legislators for the Day” in honor of International Women’s Day.
“This year’s Legislators for the Day represent the best Pawtucket has to offer and it was a privilege to spend time with them at the State House. International Women’s Day acknowledges and celebrates the vast accomplishments of women in our world, and this special day is the perfect time to show these future leaders what women fight for and achieve within the government and the state,” said Representative Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket, Central Falls).
“The opportunity to celebrate and inspire emerging women leaders is an honor and a high point of my time as a legislator. This celebration allowed these exceptional young women to see what serving their community could entail, and it demonstrated to them the crucial voices that women contribute to our governance and in our daily lives. This is truly a remarkable and inspiring event to co-host alongside Rep. Alzate, and I look forward to it every year,” said Senator Urso (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket).
Behnema Sirleaf from Shea High School, Isabella Benevides from the Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Arts and Danicah Xavier from Tolman High School were selected as “student leaders” by their respective principals for their academic achievement and citizenship.
The students and legislators held a meet-and-greet luncheon at the State House where the students were recognized for their academic achievements. The students also participated in panel discussion on women in government and business.
After the luncheon, the students joined the legislators for a tour of the building and a view into the inner workings of state government. The students followed the legislators as they conducted their day in the State House and met with House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick), Senate President Valarie J. Lawson (D-Dist. 14, East Providence) and Rhode Island’s General Officers.
