2/4/2026 Rep. Morales urges Governor McKee to appoint a new DOT director with broad transit experience
STATE HOUSE — Following the resignation of Rhode Island Department of Transportation Director Peter Alviti Jr., Rep. David Morales is calling on Gov. Daniel J. McKee to hire a replacement with broad and comprehensive transportation experience.

“This is a critical opportunity to appoint a RIDOT Director who prioritizes all forms of transportation. Rhode Island needs leadership that will center safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers alike, particularly on dangerous corridors in Providence like North Main Street, Smith Street and Westminster Street. It also requires a director who will work collaboratively with RIPTA to strengthen statewide transit, rather than treating transit as competition for limited resources. That said, this appointment must bring real urgency to implementing Rhode Island’s Transit Master Plan so we can build a truly world-class public transportation system that serves people in every part of our state. I urge Governor McKee to prioritize candidates who are committed to expanding mobility and transit options for all Rhode Islanders, including those who do not drive. A comprehensive, statewide approach that takes public transit, walking and biking seriously will make it easier for people to get around, reduce climate emissions and further stimulate our economy,” said Representative Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence).
