MEDIA ADVISORY: House Education Committee to hear bills related to student safety
|
STATE HOUSE — The House Education Committee is scheduled to meet today to hear testimony on legislation related to student safety.
The committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. in Room 135 on the first floor of the State House.
The committee will hear testimony on the following bills:

(2026-H 7025) — this bill, introduced by Rep. John J. Lombardi (D-Dist. 8, Providence), would require school committees to provide transportation for any student who resides two or more miles from school.

(2026-H 7026) — this bill, introduced by Rep. Earl A Read III (D-Dist. 26, Coventry, West Warwick, Warwick), would direct middle and high schools which issue student identification cards to include on those cards contact crisis telephone numbers for suicide prevention and substance use disorder prevention.

(2026-H 7027) — this bill, introduced by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick), would expand the requirement that all high schools and middle schools, whether they are publicly or privately run to maintain on site a functional AED while establishing and implementing a cardiac emergency response plan in these schools.

(2026-H 7116) — this bill, introduced by Representative Lombardi, would require the Department of Education to develop and make available for use in all schools a mental health curriculum. School districts would be required to provide four hours of mental health instruction to seventh grade students.

(2026-H 7117) — this bill, introduced by Representative Lombardi, would direct the Council on Elementary and Secondary Education to develop recommendations for a high school curriculum to prepare students for successful postsecondary education and careers in computer science.

(2026-H 7140) — this bill, introduced by House Minority Whip David J. Place (R-Dist. 47, Burrillville, Glocester), would allow any school district to petition the Board of Education to use a lower-cost curriculum program, if the program is substantially similar to other programs approved by the Board of Education.
The House Education Committee is chaired by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston).
