11/21/2025 Sen. Quezada statement on ICE Superior Court incident
STATE HOUSE – Sen. Ana B. Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence) today issued the following statement regarding the wrongful apprehension of a teenage court intern at Superior Court by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers yesterday:

“As a proud Latina and elected official in Rhode Island, I feel deeply troubled by the recent incident involving ICE in our state. This is not about whether ICE has a job to do—it’s about how they do it and the impact their actions have on our communities.

“What we saw was not just an enforcement action. It was a moment that caused fear, humiliation and trauma, especially for our Latino community. Incidents like this remind us that, too often, simply looking Latino can make any one of us a target, regardless of our status, our history or our contributions to this state.

“Rhode Island is a place built on diversity, hard work and respect. No young man—no person—should have to experience what we saw. We must demand accountability, transparency and humane practices from every agency that operates in our neighborhoods.

“I stand with our community, and I stand with the young man who endured this painful experience. We deserve safety, dignity and justice. And I will continue using my voice to make sure that every Latino in Rhode Island is treated with the respect and humanity they deserve.”
